Sendai Girls, also called “Senjo”, is a joshi promotion based, not surprisingly, in Sendai. The promotion was founded in 2005 by Meiko Satomura, a female professional wrestler who achieved success in the 2000’s with the women’s promotion GAEA Japan, and Jinsei Shinzaki, a male professional wrestler who is also the president of Michinoku Pro Wrestling. As the only experienced wrestler on the initial roster, Satomura served as the trainer and booker in addition to her duties as a wrestler. On July 9, 2006 the new promotion held its first show in front of 2498 fans at Sendai’s Sun Plaza. This show consisted of Senjo’s first four wrestlers making their debuts in singles matches against four legends of joshi puroresu. The main event featured Satomura against Aja Kong, whom she has feuded with throughout her career.
Due to the small size of the roster, most of Senjo’s subsequent shows have featured the Sendai Girls facing wrestlers from other promotions. The theme of “Sendai Girls vs. Enemies” is very common for their events. Their talent also frequently appear in other joshi promotions. Most of their active talent is young (18-25, their oldest wrestler is 31) and has less than 5 years’ experience. One of the more notable traits of the talent is that all usually competed in similarly-patterned red and white uniforms with a number and the word “Sendai” below on the front. They did away with these outfits in late 2010 though, changing to outfits with various red & black patterns.
Sendai Girls currently has no titles but has hosted title matches from other promotions and they recognize the JWP Jr. Championship and POP Championship. They also run one or two annual tournaments.
