Nanae Takahashi is a young joshi veteran who has already established herself as one of the top woman wrestlers of the 2000s. She debuted in All-Japan Women at age 17 in 1996 and rose to fame quickly, winning 2 AJW Tag Team Championships in less than 25 months. Early in 2000 she won the AJW Singles Title for the first time and won several WWWA World Heavyweight and Tag Team Titles between them and the promotion’s folding, and she is recognized as the final WWWA World Champion in 2006.
Takahashi was also the founder of the now-defunct SUN promotion, which she started soon after her 10th anniversary celebration in 2006 and ran until it closed in April 2009. During this time she also resurrected the AWA World Women’s Championship and also became recognized as the first AWA Japan Women’s Champion on June 19, 2007, after the AWA World Women’s title was retired out of respect for four-time former champion Sherri Martel, who had died on June 15. Since the closure of SUN she is once again working as a freelancer and remains active throughout the major joshi promotions. In October 2009 she added to her list of accomplishments by winning the NEO Tag Team Championship for the first time. Her possibly career-defining singles win came in April 2010 when she won her first “major” singles title, the JWP Openweight Championship, ending then-champion Kayoko Haruyama’s record-setting reign at just 11 days short of 2 years.
Takahashi is also the founder and promoter of Passion Red, a small indy promotion/faction she founded that’s also a stable consisting of herself, Natsuki*Taiyo and occasionally Kazumi Shimouma. She began promoting her own indy shows under the Passion Red label in January 2009 and has done 4 such events to date. In late 2010 she was named the manager of her newest effort, Stardom, a new promotion designed to be for girls and young women who want to be wrestlers-she will compete in the promotion along with Natsuki*Taiyo and popular bikini idol Yuzuki Aikawa, who Nanae beat in her debut match, and will run the promotion behind-the-scenes alongside former wrestler Fuka (the promotion’s GM) among others. She remains active in other promotions under her own labels although she could also be considered a freelancer.
Nanae won the 2010 Tokyo Sports Grand Prix Joshi Puroresu Grand Prize Award for what could be considered the career year she had in 2010, both inside and outside the ring.
Nanae will celebrate her 15th anniversary in wrestling in July 2011.
