IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Championship History

The International Wrestling Grand Prix (IWGP) Tag Team Championship is a tag team title in New Japan Pro Wrestling. It was created in 1985 when Tatsumi Fujinami and Kengo Kimura defeated Antonio Inoki and Seiji Sakaguchi in a tournament final. Though in the past it has been held by both heavyweights and junior heavyweights, the creation of the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship in 1998 has made it more of an exclusively heavyweight title. In addition to Japan, it has been defended in the United States and Mexico.

To this date there have been 57 IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Champions. They are listed below in order of reign along with which reign it was (some won it multiple times, also note that in the case of wrestlers having more than one reign the numbers listed only count subsequent reigns with that particular partner even if one or both wrestlers have had more reigns than that number with different partners), length of reign and number of successful defenses. All records are based on the official records from New Japan’s title history pages on their official website, http://www.njpw.co.jp.
